Join us for Movie Night at the OACC!

This month we will be screening Extreme Private Eros: Love Song 1974
directed by Japanese director Kazuo Hara. A renowned documentary filmmaker,
Kzauo Hara obsessively follows Takeda Miyuki, his former lover, outspoken
feminist and radical. This extremely private film documents Miyuki’s
relationship with an American GI, her subsequent pregnancy and birth, and
emotionally raw discussions and arguments on Hara and Miyuki’s fraught
relationship.

The film will be introduced by Tooth. Tooth is an Oakland based artist and
filmmaker. He is the initiator of the community-based film arts project
known as Black Hole: a still evolving vehicle of what he terms a type of
“perceptual activism.” Manifesting in a program of free weekly
screenings, performances, workshops, and gatherings that have recently led
to the founding of a still forming film resource center and free school,
based in a West Oakland warehouse.

08/21/2012 - Moving Beyond Cars: Films and Strategies for Livable Streets

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 05:00 PM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/l0GXAYaQGLU/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

Transition Berkeley and The Ecology Center invite you to enjoy a series of
short films celebrating green transportation solutions from around the
world and here in the Bay Area.

We'll be inspired by films from Copenhagen and Curitiba where biking,
pedestrian, and public transit systems have made these cities much
healthier and more enjoyable while reducing greenhouse gas emissions; and
from NYC where planners are rethinking traditional bike lanes and parking
spaces.

We'll also learn about a local cafe owner who loves biking and makes it a
central part of his business. Following the films we'll brainstorm ways to
encourage all of Berkeley to move beyond cars - to walk, bike and take
public transit.

Bring your ideas for a green transportation public outreach campaign, as
well as suggestions for practical plans Berkeley can adopt to create more
livable streets.

son of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and a Yale-trained director,
turned around the once struggling troupe, molding it into one of the stars
of the Bay Area theater scene. His scripts, including the revealing story
of his grief over his father’s death, "Ghost Light," have earned him the
Bay Area Critics Circle and Dean Goodman Choice awards for best direction
and production. Join us for an enlightening evening with the dynamic
Moscone, who is now in his twelfth season as artistic director at Cal

Fresh off the release of his double EP Home Ghost / Ghost of Payphone
[http://peckthetowncrier.bandcamp.com] and back from a tour of the Pacific
Northwest, Peck plays his first Fairfax show with his own bed in town.

He’s teaming up with kindred locals LA FIVA
and the never-been-to-Fairfax
Major Powers and the Lofi Symphony
a bill that recently
destroyed Sacramento. It’s not there anymore. This might be your last
chance to enjoy the City of Fairfax. 19 Broadway’s the place to be
because:

Peck marries electric jazz and hip-hop into songs that progress like
freestyles. “He can go from p-funk to honky-tonk at warp speed, use his
cadence like an instrument and play mean guitar licks while rapping about
James Brown, underwear and other obscurities.” (Eugene Weekly
[http://www.eugeneweekly.com/article/peck-town-crier])

“Chris Peck is a singular artist  straddling the nerdy and the hip with
smart, speed-changing rhymes, a lean-in and an open-faced, underplayed
handclap ” (KQED

(Los Angeles) and Marielle V. Jakobsons. Curated by Danny Paul Grody

Soundwave Humanities invites you to discover the power of Zen with
collaborative Zen-inspired meditative electro acoustic performances and
introductions to meditations and Zen practice in the beautiful Julia
Morgan-designed settings of the San Francisco Zen Center. Sound artist and
violinist Jakobsons begins with a haunting performance in the Buddha Hall
using the contained energy of tranquility in music to create a performance
that transforms into a strong meditational provocation. Musician McCann
continues in the open-air courtyard gardens interlacing a richly textured
ambience with blissful string and synthesizer arrangements, each piece
balancing on a unique instrumental axis. West Coast dream-drone unit En
ends the night in the Dining Room with acoustic koto used across the stereo
spectrum and a looping guitar creating the haze of a beautiful, slowly
shifting drone, creating an epic slow-burner that reaches heights both
angelic and cacophonous.

Teen pregnancy and young motherhood is an issue that spans education,
politics, health, family life and more. It has received great attention
recently with the federal decision to block over-the-counter sales of an
after-sex contraceptive pill to girls under age 17. Given this ruling, as
well as the creation of other new health-care legislation, what is the
reality of teen pregnancy and teen reproductive care? How are our
communities addressing this issue? Are there new barriers to birth control
access and if so, what are they? To discuss this issue, we’re bringing
together experts from the fields of health care, psychology, politics and
more.

08/28/2012 - 'Double Feature: Contagion & Panic in the Streets'

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 04:30 PM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/Bd0_iOWbIn0/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

Following the 6:30 pm screening of Contagion, Mark Smolinski, Director of
Global Health Threats with the Skoll Global Threats Fund and a consultant
on Contagion will discuss the science behind the film and the ways in which
the threat of global pandemic has changed between the eras of the two films
in our double feature.
The San Francisco Film Society’s Global Threats Film Series continues
with a global pandemic double feature of Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion
(USA 2011) and Elia Kazan’s Panic in the Streets (USA 1950)!

In a world of mass transit, the transmission of a deadly disease has rapid
global reach, as shown in Soderbergh’s expert thriller. Though the MEV-1
virus that devastates the planet in Contagion is fictional, the science
behind it is not. To ground the terrifying story of a pandemic in fact,
screenwriter Scott Z. Burns worked closely with leading scientists to
present a chillingly possible scenario. As the other characters suffer the
depredations of the disease in a daze, it is the epidemiologists who are
the film’s heroes, from Kate Winslet’s focused calm as a Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) doctor on the front lines to the
diligent researcher at the World Health Organization (WHO) played by Marion
Cotillard, who is trying to track the virus’s Patient Zero. Made with
admirable style and economy, the film educates and informs while also being
viscerally entertaining.

Written by Scott Z. Burns. Photographed by Steven Soderbergh. With Matt
Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard. 106 min. Distributed by
Warner Bros.

In Elia Kazan’s New Orleansᅵ"set noirish thriller Panic in the Streets,
an illegal immigrant fresh off a boat is killed after a card game with
criminals Blackie (Jack Palance) and Raymond (Zero Mostel). The doctor who
performs the autopsy on the unidentified corpse immediately notices
something awry and calls in Dr. Clinton Reed (Richard Widmark) of the U.S.
Heath Service, who diagnoses pneumonic plague. Reed must work with a gruff
police captain (Paul Douglas) to try and find the killersᅵ"who may be
carrying the infectionᅵ"before they skip town and spread a deadly
epidemic. For Kazan, the plague is more of a metaphorical device than an
opportunity for a realistic procedural about prevention, but the film
provides a stark reminder of how much more complicated it has become to
prevent the spread of deadly diseases in the last 60 years.

09/21/2012 - Kathy Mata Ballet Autumn Showcase

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 06:00 PM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/g1eevVfRdmk/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

Kathy Mata Ballet is proud to announce its upcoming performance, Friday,
September 21, 2012 at 8pm, on the main stage of the stunning San Francisco
Conservatory of Music!
This lively performance will consist of a variety of
dance styles, including classical and contemporary ballet as well as
modern, jazz,
and belly dance. The program will feature newly choreographed works along
with some beautiful tried-and-true classics.

Kathy Mata Ballet will be joined by special guest, the Gnosis Dance
Collective, who will perform their enthralling
and thought-provoking piece, “The Green Chair.” In the acoustically
perfect San
Francisco Conservatory concert hall, the program will feature live music by
pianist Lucy Hudson, flautist Khalilah Alston, violinist Keegan Dwyer,
bassist
Colin Williams, vocalist Robin Yukiko, and musical group The Verms.

Like all of Kathy Mata Ballet’s performances, admission is complimentary,
though donations
are encouraged. This is a performance not to be missed!

About Kathy Mata Ballet:
Founded in 1988, Kathy Mata Ballet is one of the few dance companies in the
country to provide talented adult dancers from non-dance professions with
the
opportunity to train and perform. The company dancers, all of whom rehearse
at least four times a week on top of their professional working day, come
from a
variety of careers including accounting, engineering, law, and scientific
research.
Unlike most dance companies, all Kathy Mata Ballet performances benefit
community
charities or are offered free of charge.

Bringing dance to deserving community audiences is one of the group’s
main goals.

The company regularly performs at places like the Sequoias Senior Living
Center and the Castro Senior
Center, among others. We also have been involved for several years in
performing
in the Spring Dance Inspiration show at the Cowell Theater, which has
raised
tens of thousands of dollars for brain tumor research and treatment.
In addition, we offer regular studio performances and donate the proceeds
to the Alonzo
King LINES Dance Center, our rehearsal home. This emphasis on community
service is one of the greatest joys of the company.

08/23/2012 - Once Upon a Time: The Future of Storytelling in the Age of Big
Data

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 05:30 AM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/WmkBJw7HAtE/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

Data can be a powerful tool--but humans respond to stories, not figures,
which is why all of us are ultimately in the storytelling business.
Properly deployed, data can tell unexpected and amazing stories. But what's
the secret to using it to communicate effectively? What tools do we need to
realize the promise of big data as a storytelling medium? Join us for this
revealing and provocative discussion with Frank Rose, author of The Art of
Immersion, and Geoff McGhee, who specializes in interactive data
visualization and multimedia storytelling as Creative Director for Media
and Communications, Stanford's Bill Lane Center for the American West.

Inspired by the exhibition Phantoms of Asia, join us for a night of
communicating with the spirit world via shamanism. Practiced widely in
Korea, it's a belief system wherein a person (shaman) acts as an
intermediary between humans and spirits.

Our special guest is Dohee Lee, currently an artist in residence at the
Headlands Center for the Arts. She will reveal excerpts from her
work-in-progress, Mago, which layers installation, music, dance, animation,
and ritual with Korean traditional art forms and shamanism. She'll also be
performing throughout the museum in the galleries and the courts, before
her 8pm key performance.

Bonus: learn more about shamanism with one of our star storytellers who
also happens to practice shamanism.

DJ-in-residence Vin Sol will provide the music (including a special mix for
the night), and the cash bars will provide the libations.

This is your last chance to see Phantoms of Asia at MATCHA. It closes in
just a few weeks.

Please join us for this special benefit screening for local filmmaker John
Maringouin, who is raising money for his emergency lung surgery. All
proceeds go to support the John Maringouin Surgery Fund:
http://www.giveforward.com/johnmaringouinsurgeryfund

In February 2007 Martin Strel began an insane attempt to be the first
person to swim the entire length of the world's most dangerous river, the
mighty Amazon. Martin is an endurance swimmer from Slovenia, who swims
rivers - the Mississippi, the Danube and the Yangtze to date - to highlight
their pollution to the world. Martin is also a rather overweight,
horseburger loving Slovenian in his fifties who drinks two bottles of red
wine a day... even when swimming.

John Maringouin is a San Franciscoᅵ"based artist and filmmaker. He makes
tactile, situational films that focus on relationships between the visceral
and the ephemeral. Professionally, he has crashed cars with Jackass, swum
the Amazon with drunken Slovenes and sprinted back alleys at midnight with
the Rolling Stones. His films have screened at festivals from Sundance to
Moscow. In 2008, his documentary Running Stumbled was nominated for an
Independent Spirit Award. In 2009, his film Big River Man received the
World Cinema Cinematography Award.

MUJI presents "Product fitness 80 Exhibition"

What would happen if we used 20% less materials and energy to make
products? After the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and the
subsequent nuclear disaster in Japan, those impacts are forcing people to
reconsider lifestyles dependent on the excess consumption of resources.
Acting in unison with people thinking about their new styles of life, from
August 24 to August 30, MUJI will present Product fitness 80, an exhibition
at SOMArts in San Francisco that calls for a reconsideration of the way in
which MUJI addresses product design and product “fitness”.The figure 80
reflects on what would happen if we were to make all products using just
80% of the materials and energy that we have been using to date.MUJI
constantly exercises self-restraint in the design and manufacture of its
products, asking itself “is this necessary?” or “is this going too
far?”Product fitness 80 reflects MUJI’s belief that a little restraint
will change our life and the world.

Thursday, August 30th - Talk Show + Live Concert @SOMArts

The webzine Caveat Lector will be hosting a salon and an open mike (music,
spoken word, or whatever you would like to perform) at ArtInternationale
Gallery and Art Lounge, at 963 Pacific Avenue (cross streets: Pacific and
Mason), in San Francisco's latest jewel, a budding urban village for the
arts hidden in a pocket of Russian Hill.

Our aim is to create a comfortable setting where artists in all media can
meet and discuss creative ideas with artists in their own and other media,
in the belief that cross-fertilization in the arts can be stimulating and
fruitful for everyone involved.

This month we will feature films by local filmmakers: "Norma's Fall," by
Rita Piffer and "The Pendulum Heart" and a short film about her recent
adventures in Guatemala by Nara Denning.

Date: Tuesday, August 28
Time: 7-9 pm

We'll be starting the salon at 7, and the features, followed by the open
mike, will begin at 8.

The special events of Easter Weekend are in addition to all of Playland's
regular attractions. Guests pay one low price to enter and can play all
day: $10 for children and seniors, and $15 for general admission.
Playland-Not-at-the-Beach is a nonprofit Museum of Fun. Designed and built
entirely by volunteers, the 20+ interactive exhibits celebrate the magic
and history of America's bygone amusements -- circuses, carnivals, magic,
side shows, penny arcades, amusement devices, pinball arcades, haunted
houses, and beautiful art everywhere. Our goal is to educate newer
generations about the bygone days and allow those who remember Whitney's
Playland and the Sutro Baths the opportunity to recapture the glorious
sights and sounds of that marvelous era.

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/svaogGRuDAw/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

The Red Poppy Art House is pleased to present new mixed -media works by
Peter Foucault investigating the nature of drawing and community, where
chance factors and collaboration exchange and collide to develop what
ultimately becomes the finished piece.

In his current body of work, Peter Foucault creates a series of drawing
projects where outside factors influence the creation of abstract
compositions. Among the selection of works presented in I Walk the Line,
Foucault has collaborated with a small sensor driven robot that interacts
with the artist and the public at large to create layers of mark making
which he later returns to the studio to further translates these layers,
decoding the algorithm generated by this machine interface.

Additionally, other works presented include Belgium beer suspended in blobs
of ink which Foucault then blows across the surface of the paper to further
build on his mark making and collage techniques.

Show runs from Thursday August 9th - Saturday September 22nd, 2012

09/07/2012 - Geometria Concretus

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 04:00 PM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/bHOG6-K9fVU/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

Electric Works is pleased to present Geometria Concretus, mixed media art
work by Lucy Puls, September 7 - October 6 with a reception Friday,
September 7, 6-8 PM at 1360 Mission Street in San Francisco.

Puls' work has centered around 'stuff' ᅵ" our possessions, objects and
items which are so important in our day-to-day lives. It is these
possessions, specifically the discarded ones, which consume Puls' interest.
The latest examples of these disposable possessions that Puls works with is
the center of the American dream: our homes.

Since early 2009 Puls has been photographing interiors of "used up" homes.
It is difficult to enter these stripped bare spaces, both from the
practical level of gaining access and the psychological level of entering a
space where some disharmony has occurred. The immediate punch of simmering
emotion and decay, with its reek of disruption and intractability, growls
regression - these rooms now exist in a more primal state. This potent
atmosphere reinforces the perception of encroachment on a private
topography that causes ones heart to flutter - it seems wrong to trespass.
Strangely, as it always seems odd given the rawness of the setting, these
spaces are loaded with striking vestiges of banality: glow-in-the-dark
stars on a ceiling, nails evenly spaced where pictures once hung, or carpet
indentations from furniture and repeated traffic. There was a time when
normal everyday life happened here. In contrast to the ordinariness are the
physical materials that make up these spaces, so brutally used up and
disordered, ground down and ground upon, that walls and surfaces emerge as
a type of chronicle. Its a peculiar, chaotic, beautiful, repellent read.

In Geometria Concretus, Puls centers on issues of control and surrender
inspired by our culture's constant shifting of desire. By tracking
possessions that are materially, technologically, and/or psychologically
expired - passageways to the collective conscience are traversed.

Lucy Puls received her B.S. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and
her M.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design. Puls' work has been
exhibited internationally and she is represented in numerous collections
including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Oakland Museum, the
Kent and Vicki Logan Collection, and the Progressive Art Collection,
Mayfield Village, OH. Puls is a Professor of Art at University of
California, Davis.

09/07/2012 - In Stasis

In Stasis
Curated by Jackie Im and Aaron Harbour
September 7 - 30, 2012
Reception Friday, September 7, 7:00-10:00 pm

MacArthur B Arthur is pleased to present In Stasis, featuring work by
Johanna Billing, Liam Everett, Roza Janiszewska, Bob Linder, Anna
Sagström, and Joseph Thomas. Curated by Jackie Im and Aaron Harbour.

In Stasis is an exhibition that is at a stand off with itself. It is
neither about a specific idea nor is it simply a collection of objects,
though objects and ideas certainly play a part. The exhibition sits in an
intermediary space, much like the people in Johanna Billing’s "Project
for a Revolution." In it, a young group of people sits waiting for the next
thing to happen; there is a potential forestalled, whether this is out of
incapacity or apathy is unclear. Likewise the works in the show will take
up room in the gallery - waiting for the next step, for something to happen.

In biology a stasis is a period of no evolutionary change, in which a
species has reached a state of punctuated equilibrium. Is the exhibition
period is a length of time in which a group of objects and images are
frozen in such a state - the auratic effect of the nomination artwork
taking as its price change - or is presentation the beginning of an
alternative state? Whether an artwork equates ambition fulfilled or is
rather a barring of the future is difficult to ascertain.

Meanwhile, locked in the gallery, the artworks relax, spending most of
their days in an unpeopled room amongst each other without a reading from a
viewer or the familiar hand of their fabrication, the memory of which is
fading.

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 06:00 PM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/AIpPihKupMs/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

The program will demonstrate the diversity of the visual music format.
Visual music is an umbrella term for all kinds of things: music with a
color organ or oscilloscope techniques, expanded cinema or animated films.
This diversity has been further extended by developments in digital
technology. A common denominator for all‚ of the different techniques and
formats is an evenly balanced combination of visual and acoustic elements.

09/15/2012 - Berkeley Farmers' Market STRING BAND CONTEST

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 09:00 AM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/mThMrCv77uE/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

Twenty string bands will compete for sacks of tokens redeemable for fresh
produce. There will also open jamming around Civic Center Park hosted by
the Black Crown String Band. The Contest is the centerpiece of the Berkeley
Old Time Music Convention. Most of the bands will be fiddle-banjo combos,
but there are always some that push the old-time envelope: jug band, Greek
band (complete with undulating belly dancer), ragtime mandolins, Irish
stepdancers, Italian tarantellas - anything goes as long as it’s
unplugged.

Background:
What began 10 years ago as the Berkeley Farmers’ Market String Band
Contest has blossomed into the Berkeley Old Time Music Convention: a
full-on, five-day festival of old-time southern music and dance with
concerts, square dancing, a string band contest, workshops, and activities
especially for kids and families.

Admission is free and it is free to compete in the Contest, but you must
reserve your space on the list to compete.
