02/27/2013 - An Uncommon Journey, with Deborah Strobin and Ilie Wacs

Strobin and her brother Wacs fled from Nazi Austria to the Shanghai Jewish
ghetto. Hear their story of escape from Vienna to Shanghai to the U.S.
during World War II and the ultimately uplifting tale of survival as seen
through the eyes of two children with their different memories of the
period that shaped their lives. Today, Strobin is a well-known San
Francisco philanthropist, and Wacs is a highly successful fashion designer
and prominent artist. Join these two as they tell their remarkable story
and put a spotlight on a piece of Holocaust history that’s not widely
known.

David Tipper is a British composer and producer specializing in electronic
music that ranges from Ambient, through Trip Hop, to uptempo Nuskool
Breakbeat. His live performances consist largely of his own unreleased
compositions, and he is highly regarded for scratching his own sounds over
his music, creating a live element of turntablism stemming from prowess
early in his career as a vinyl DJ. Discovered as a teenager DJing in a
London nightclub by soon to be manager Richie Warren. Their earliest
conversations centered on bass frequencies and rhythms underlying beats,
and they began researching the science involved in creating the most
effective dance music. A favorite of broken beat heads around the globe and
we are very excited to wobble and squelch it out with him on the dancefloor

12/28/2012 - The Hard Times Revue - Depression Era Diversions

Oddball Films brings you The Hard Times Revue: Depression-Era Diversions,
an evening of cartoons, musical numbers and ephemeral oddities from the
1930s. One of the darkest decades of the 20th Century, America in the
1930s faced untold hardships like the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl
and cinema supplied a much-needed diversion, but could never quite shake
the bleakness of the times. This program of vintage films highlights the
struggle of the American people and the fantasies invented to alleviate
their hardships. Betty Boop gets hooked on smack in the blackballed
cartoon interpretation of the Cab Calloway song Minnie the Moocher (1932).
7 year-old Sammy Davis junior shines as he sings and dances his way to the
Oval Office in the controversial all-black musical comedy Rufus Jones for
President (1932). Spencer Tracy imagines a haunting, writhing Hell in
Dante's Inferno (1935). George Pal will knock you off your feet in his art
deco puppet wonderland in the early Puppetoon Cavalcade of Music (1934).
The famous talking Tiffany Chimps get into hilarious anthropomorphic
antics, make an ass of yourself, playing Donkey Baseball (1935) and bundle
up with Duke Ellington in Bundle of Blues (1933). Plus timely newsreels,
musical surprises and so much more!

01/03/2013 - Litquake's Epicenter: Literary Salon with Stuart Neville +
Cara Black

Posted: 03 Jan 2013 05:00 PM PST
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/ZsqsEFVRWic/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

Join Litquake at the Epicenter for the launch of Stuart Neville's new
novel, "Ratlines."

Neville is the author of three previous books including "The Ghosts of
Belfast," winner of the 2010 L.A. Times Book Prize. He lives in Armagh,
Northern Ireland. He'll be joined in conversation by the Bay Area's own
Cara Black, author of 13 books in the bestselling Aimee Leduc detective
series, which is set in Paris.

About "Ratlines"

Ireland, 1963. As the Irish people prepare to welcome President John F.
Kennedy to the land of his ancestors, a German businessman is murdered in a
seaside guesthouse. He is the third foreign national to die within a few
days, and Minister for Justice Charles Haughey is desperate to protect a
shameful secret: the dead men were all former Nazis granted asylum by the
Irish government.

A note from the killers is found on the corpse, addressed to Colonel Otto
Skorzeny, Hitler's favourite commando. It says simply: "We are coming for
you. Await our call."

Lieutenant Albert Ryan, Directorate of Intelligence, is ordered to
investigate the murders and protect Skorzeny. But as he infiltrates
Ireland's secret network of former Nazis and collaborators, Ryan must make
a terrible choice: his country or his conscience?

"'Ratlines' is a belter: fast, furious, bloody and good."
-Ian Rankin, New York Times bestselling author of Exit Music

"Stuart Neville's books just get better and better and 'Ratlines' is simply
superb."
-Mark Billingham, bestselling author of Rush of Blood

"Wildly entertaining, 'Ratlines' is a superb mystery but in addition, a
spotlight on a slice of Irish history largely ignored. This is a complex
mystery told in the exceptional style that Stuart Neville has made his own.
Jameson and Nazis, Irish rebel songs and Charles Haughey, it's a bold and
brilliant blend."
-Ken Bruen, Shamus Award-winning author of The Guard

Presented by Litquake Literary Festival

01/04/2013 - Art Murmur at Johansson Projects

Posted: 04 Jan 2013 03:00 PM PST
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/yBSiDj5ATWY/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

Johansson Projects presents two simultaneous shows featuring the works of
Rachel Kaye in SHEBAM! POP! BLOP! WIZZ! and Casey Watson in Opal Dust.

Rachel Kaye's textile playgrounds channel the eternally dramatic love
affair between art and fashion. Ripped from fashion magazines today's top
trends melt into mazes of color and pattern, pure visual stimulation devoid
of opinion or moral stance. As if conducting an operation, Kaye
deconstructs the visual fabric of her physical fabrics, letting the
symbiosis of art and fashion exist on the same picture plane. Eventually
any trace of the textiles' former life as a clothing object is forgotten as
the patterns invite comparisons to graffiti, the internet, hieroglyphics
and even technicolor cartography. The ghosts of high art masters like Yayoi
Kusama and Andy Warhol loom above the trendy polka dots and floral motifs,
yet instead of lamenting their grand visions' fall to consumer levels Kaye
revels in the beautiful all-at-onceness of it all.

Opal Dust features Casey Watson depicting the sharp-edged task of
portraying a soft exterior. Watson’s meticulous colored pencil and
graphite drawings invite the viewer to unearth her treasures and inspect
their rusted edges. Up close, petals, leaves and stems re-arrange
themselves into kaleidoscopic wreaths. These newly forged orbs careen and
breed, evoking ideas of natural symmetry and squished floral formations.
From a distance, the same drawings take on new forms as fireworks,
galaxies, and magnified molecules pop from the paper.

Shows run until January 12, 2013
First Friday: January 4, 5-8pm

01/05/2013 - Happy Birthday, Elvis! with Jim Anderson + The Rebels

Posted: 05 Jan 2013 06:00 PM PST
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/Q3_QC69ALmY/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

Jan 5, 8pm; Jan 6, 2pm

While Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee celebrates Elvis Presley's 78th
Birthday Weekend with receptions, celebrations, and concerts, Pleasanton's
Firehouse Arts Center will be hosting its own special Elvis birthday events
with the return engagement of Jim Anderson + The Rebels
(www.jimandersonmusic.net) in their hit "Early Elvis" Tribute Show.

Vocalist Jim Anderson has made a big name for himself with his tribute to
the early years (1954-1966) and early hits of Elvis Presley. Selling out
most venues, including their appearance last year at the Firehouse in
record-breaking time, the five-member group has been touted by lifelong
Elvis fans as, "The most authentic tribute to early Elvis Presley to
date." Jim is not an 'Elvis Impersonator'. He is, however, thought by
many to be the best interpreter of Elvis' early music today.

According to Anderson, he began performing in 1986 while in high school
after being coerced by his football buddies. After about 6 words of "Love
Me Tender", to his surprise, he received a screaming standing ovation and
could barely hear the music. The reaction was so positive that Jim was
immediately booked for several small venues. The venues continued to grow
larger and he became an opening act for such renowned names as: The
Platters, The Coasters, The Isley Brothers, and the "Ragin' Cajun" himself,
Doug Kershaw.

From "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Hound Dog", to "Don't Be Cruel" and "Jailhouse
Rock," the show will be full of the songs that keep the legend alive.
Along with his band The Rebels, each a talented solo musician in his own
right, Jim Anderson will recreate the sound, the songs, and the memories of
Elvis Presley, and join together with the crowds in Memphis and fans all
over the world to say 'Happy Birthday, Elvis!'

Multiple Stimuli Overload in downtown Berkeley...

The East Bay amorphous group of post-surrealist soundscape artists known as
Thomas Carnacki open the evening with sleight of hand and sound, joined on
this occasion by guests Sheila Bosco and Cheryl Leonard. An assortment of
odd instrumentation and dada-esque tendancies will prevail.

French Radio follows up with a set that promises deep swells of improvised
immersive sound, layered with melodic passages from invisible soundtracks.
Bruce Anderson of MX-80 infamy brings his distinct guitar sound to the mix,
AC Way of Sutekh Hexen gives the solid base of subterranean density through
grizzled electronics and vocal flourishes, and Jim Kaiser of Petit Mal
contributes musique concrete techniques through reel tapes/shortwave radio
and various contact microphones in distress. As a trio, this group has
played in the Bay Area for over a decade, albeit usually no more than once
per year, making the occasional live performance a rare treat not to be
missed.

Oakland based video artist Jerry Smith provides projected hallucinations
for the French Radio set, weaving an open ended narrative set along the
California coastline and filtered through live processing.

Artist Reception: Thursday, January 10, 6-8 PM

In Tuning For The Edge Of The Line Elaine Buckholtz will take over the

hidden aspects of architectural forms in relation to painting. She uses

movement, and light. Her fascination with light has a long history.
Buckholtz will use her background in lighting and theater design in this
exhibition to generate her own luminous theater in the gallery.

Creativity Explored announces the inaugural solo exhibition of Vincent
Jackson, who at age 52 is one of the most prolific and longest-practicing
artists at the studio. For nearly 30 years ᅵ" as long as Creativity
Explored has been in existence ᅵ"Jackson has worked in the studio five
days a week, creating large-scale, brightly colored, intense and soulful
portraits in oil pastels and other media that break the human form into
geometric shapes. The resulting mask-like works can be viewed as a
contemporary renewal of traditional African and Oceanic folk art imagery
that has entranced art collectors around the world. Jackson’s repertoire
also encompasses intriguing abstract compositions that incorporate the
geometric shapes of his iconic portraits. The artist’s bold, graphic
designs have a huge following in the interior design world, and have been
licensed to major retailers such as design giant Crate & Barrel’s CB2
contemporary furniture annex; and, also to San Francisco Bay Area artisan
chocolatier Recchuitti Confections.

Don’t miss this first show of 2013, featuring one of Creativity

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 10:00 AM PST

January 11th - Feb 21st, Mon-Sun 12-6pm

On January 11th, 2013, 4x5 Gallery will present Cliche featuring the work
of the photography group 81 Bees, as part of the gallery's soft opening
series of community based exhibitions.

As part of 4x5 Gallery's mission to open our space to Bay Area-based
photography groups and serve as a community resource for local
photographers and enthusiasts, we are pleased to welcome 81 Bees and
provide a space for these emerging photographers to display their work.

Taking a tongue and cheek look at cliches through the medium of
photography, 17 Bay Area artists will display a series of images that are
unafraid of cliches, but rather delve into the action of finding original
meaning in the mundane. Notes 4x5 Gallery founder Gordon Szeto, "The
works, well, it's painfully perfect and funny."

Born out of the recognition of a mutual passion and talent for photography,
the group, 81 Bees formed in spring 2008. For nearly five years, the
members of 81 Bees have continually inspired to motivate, collaborate and
learn from one another-whether it be new printing techniques or strategies
for furthering themselves as artists.

evening, featuring Mario Guarneri and his new ensemble tbd-a quartet.

Trumpeter Mario Guarneri brings to his performances a fresh creative voice,
amazing technical ease, and an intense desire to touch people with his
music. His career has encompassed everything from playing with Louis
Armstrong at the age of 13 to fifteen seasons with the Los Angeles
Philharmonic. Guarneri has recorded solo albums on the Crystal and Nonesuch
labels, played principal trumpet with the LA Chamber Orchestra for ten
seasons, and appeared on over 300 TV and motion picture soundtracks, most
notably as soloist on Godfather III.

01/12/2013 - Family Birding -Christmas Bird Count4Kids

Interested in learning about winter birds in a fun, family-friendly event?
Families are invited to San Francisco Botanical Garden for its first annual
Christmas Bird Count4Kids.

On January, 12, from 8am to 12:30pm experienced birders will lead teams of
children and their parents on different routes through the Garden for the
annual bird count.

After an easy 90-minute observation walk, groups will gather for a brown
bag lunch at the San Francisco County Fair Building to tally and share
results, and learn the importance of Citizen Science monitoring for bird
conservation.
A binocular boot camp and birding basics will be offered at 8:30 am.

For more information contact Andrew at ***@sfbg.org or call
415-661-1316 xt. 400. Register at www.sfbg.org.
The event is free and open to all children aged 8-16. Space is limited to
36 children.

The CBC4Kids was launched in 2007 by Tom Rusert and Darren Peterie of
Sonoma Birding and has been spreading across North America ever since.
"Every year for over a century, Christmas Bird counts have been organized
across America through Audubon, mainly for adults, during mid-December and
early January," said Rusert. "Young kids with their families are often not
included in this important 24-hour, rigorous 'citizen science' effort so we
created the CBC4Kids and their families. This is a stand-alone, half-day
event instilling some of the important basic ingredients in the grand old
Audubon tradition. The objective is to have fun, and potentially create a
hometown team of birders and conservationists for the future while
encouraging families to enjoy and respect nature together."

practice and awakened action in achieving sustainable societies. How can
ancient principles and practices of mindfulness be leveraged to reverse the
trends of ecological collapse driven by our dysfunctional relationship with
nature? Join the conversation with Dr. Scott at our second annual Members'
Night!

01/16/2013 - Chopin and the Nature of Genius - Firinn Taisdeal

Chopin was a musical genius. Yet what do we mean by "genius," exactly? Is
genius only a matter of specialized brain function, or is it the result of
specific character qualities operating over time? After all, in every era
there are prodigies, but most prodigies only go on to become former
prodigies, not geniuses. What accounts for the difference between a
prodigy who becomes a genius, and one who only becomes a former prodigy?
Can someone who was never a prodigy become a genius? Can you become a
genius?

We will examine the nature of genius, specifically as a cluster of four
character qualities, using Chopin as an example.

Forty minutes of the music of Chopin will be included, in recordings by
several different pianists, demonstrating different aspects of the genius
of Chopin, specifically derived from four character qualities.

Firinn Taisdeal is the speaker for this presentation.

01/16/2013 - SkepTalk: Overconfidence and the Frailty of Knowledge

While self-confidence is a prized human attribute, too much confidence can
be obnoxious, pernicious, and even deadly. This audience-participation
skeptalk will present a simple 10-question quiz to measure an important
aspect of individual self-confidence. With analysis and discussion of these
measurements, audience members will be better able to calibrate properly
their personal levels of self-confidence. The ultimate goal will be
a "healthier skepticism" toward one's own depth of knowledge about the
world.

01/19/2013 - Very First Concert: The Art of Listening (San Mateo)

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/aWS_kMonAYo/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

Designed to prime the ears of the youngest listeners as they explore not
only the sounds that the Orchestra's musicians make with their instruments,
but also the sounds heard all around them, this program takes place in
the "Land of Listen."

The SFCO's concert series for babies, toddlers, and children was created by
Music Director Ben Simon in 2007, in collaboration with the acclaimed
Crowden School in Berkeley. Recently expanded to San Mateo, these
20-minute "mini concerts" feature a simple musical concept, short
selections of classical repertoire, tumbling mats as an alternative to
chairs, hands-on musical activities, and lively back-and-forth dialogue
between the performers and the audience.

Consistently popular, these concerts are characterized as much by the young
listeners' lively response to the rhythmic games and activities in which
they engage (listening games, practicing different tempos, etc.) as they
are by the rapt attention paid to the Orchestra's performance.

Admission is free, but donations are gladly accepted. The San Francisco
Chamber Orchestra's Very First Concert series is a fully professional
production, produced in collaboration with the Crowden school of Berkeley.
Seating is first come, first served.

Saturday, January 19, 2013-Concert begins at 10:30, 11:10, + 11:50 a.m.
(Repeat Performances)
Congregational Church of San Mateo's Upstairs Youth Room, 105 N. Ellsworth
Ave.

Renowned for its brilliant programming and top-quality musicians, the San
Francisco Chamber Orchestra is drawing capacity crowds and national
attention for its unique admission-free policy. Committed to cultivating
new audiences for classical music, the SFCO has earned its place among the
best Bay Area ensembles. The Orchestra performs four Main Stage Concert
programs each season, plus a wide variety of educational outreach programs,
including three Family Concert programs and two Very First Concert programs
for their youngest listeners.

01/25/2013 - Oakland East Bay Symphony Presents 'A Woman's Life' on January
25

Posted: 25 Jan 2013 06:00 PM PST
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/DViTx78RZZ4/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

Oakland East Bay Symphony (OEBS) and Music Director Michael Morgan will
celebrate "A Woman's Life" on Friday, January 25, at 8 p.m. at the
Paramount Theatre in Oakland. The opening concert of 2013 will feature
works based on powerful, inspiring women. The program will include the
opening overture to Beethoven's opera "Fidelio", Hector Berlioz's Symphonie
Fantastique and the incredible song cycle written by composer Richard
Danielpour for soprano Angela Brown, based on the insightful poetry of Maya
Angelou. A pre-concert talk by John Kendall Bailey will begin at 7 p.m.

The first half of the January program shines a spotlight on the impact
women have, while the second half examines the inner thoughts of a woman.
From the overture to "Fidelio," in which the heroine, Leonore, courageously
rescues her unjustly imprisoned husband, to Berlioz's Symphonie
Fantastique, in which the composer explores his obsessive feelings for
Irish actress Harriet Smithson, the program begins by looking at the
strength of women. The second half, brought to life by Danielpour and
Brown, explores the thoughts and emotions of a woman as she journeys
through life.

Vocalist Belinda started singing on the streets of Paris and found a voice
in vintage jazz, blues and swing. She lends her own signature style to the
music of Gershwin, Willie Dixon and Louis Jordan. With Michael Parsons,
keyboard and Ollie Dudek, bass, they remain true to the style while adding
fresh interpretations to the mix. ". . . as soon as she begins to sing,
transforms the room. . . ." SF Magazine
