Animation Cel-abration Weekend
September 17- 18
Before Real 3-D and CGI, groups of dedicated craftsmen produced works of
art with brush and pen on cels. Relive the magic of these animated classics
and learn about the traditional techniques behind them.

The special events of Animation Cel-abration Weekend are in addition to all
of Playland's regular attractions. Guests pay one low price to enter and
play all day: $10 for children and seniors, and $15 for general admission.
Playland-Not-at-the-Beach is a nonprofit Museum of Fun. Designed and built
entirely by volunteers, the 20+ interactive exhibits celebrate the magic
and history of America's bygone amusements -- circuses, carnivals, magic,
side shows, penny arcades, amusement devices, pinball arcades, haunted
houses, and beautiful art everywhere. Our goal is to educate newer
generations about the bygone days and allow those who remember Whitney's
Playland and the Sutro Baths the opportunity to recapture the glorious
sights and sounds of that marvelous era.

09/22/2011 - INSIDER / OUTSIDER ART: SELECTIONS FROM BAY AREA COLLECTIONS

Posted: 22 Sep 2011 04:00 PM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/-ybz44QxAa4/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

INSIDER / OUTSIDER ART: SELECTIONS FROM BAY AREA COLLECTIONS
AT THE BEDFORD GALLERY, WALNUT CREEK, SEPTEMBER 22 ᅵ" NOVEMBER 20, 2011
Public Reception: Thursday, September 22 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the gallery
With performance by Pacific Chamber Jazz

The Bedford kicks off its 2011-12 season with Insider / Outsider Art, a
look at artwork from five prominent Bay Area collections. Inventive and
uninhibited, Outsider art has become an umbrella term for genres such as
pop culture, street art and ethnographic art; though some argue the term
has been misused. Recognizing the debate around this term, the Bedford’s
exhibition features a broad range of art and craft in variety of genres
from naïve and memory painting to folk art. It also connects audiences
with the “unschooled” artist who has abandoned or ignored traditional
influences. Insider / Outsider Art presents over 300 artworks in a diverse
range of media, and includes work by Howard Finster, Ted Gordon, Jimmy Lee
Sudduth, Esther Hamerman, Alex Maldonado, Dorothy Binger, Inez Walker, A.G.
Rizzoli and Raymond Coins.

“In this exhibition we explore the work of artists who have had no formal
training in art, and consider why they have followed their unique path in
art-making” says Carrie Lederer, Bedford Gallery Curator of Exhibitions.
“Many of the artists have achieved amazing success with their art, and
museums and galleries nationally have embraced and supported their work
with major exhibitions and catalogues. There are over 120 artists in
Insider / Outsider Art and the artworks represent a broad range of styles
and techniques from across the globe. My hope is that this exhibition will
continue the current dialogue about what it means to be an Outsider artist
in the context of the contemporary art-world.”

The Bedford has drawn work from the collections of Bonnie and Sy Grossman
of The Ames Gallery, Terri De Salvo, Stephanie + Dennis McCaffrey, Linda
and Tom Chauncey and John Turner. The pieces selected for Insider /
Outsider Art represent a broad range of styles and techniques from across
the globe. Through drawing, painting, sculpture, wood relief, tin cutouts,
textile, collage and photography, viewers get a glimpse of these unique
collections, some small and highly personal, and others that span over 30
years, cataloguing hundreds of works. For example, selections from John
Turner’s large collection include Ted Gordon, a Kentucky-born artist who
spent years in New York before moving to San Francisco in 1951. Gordon, who
worked as a medical clerk in a VA hospital, is known for his compulsive
style and his intricate, intense drawings of the human face.

Bonnie Grossman of The Ames Gallery has been collecting Outsider art for
more than 30 years ᅵ" work from her collection is featured prominently in
this show. Her collection includes work by A. G. Rizzoli, a Marin born
artist who worked for nearly 40yrs as a technical draughtsman in a San
Francisco architecture firm. At night, Rizzoli created elaborate Beaux-Arts
influenced drawings, his splendid monumental buildings were often intended
as symbolic portraits of his friends and family. His visionary
architectural drawings were only discovered after his death.

The stories of artists’ lives are, in many cases, as interesting and
intriguing as their work. Audiences will learn about the lives of artists
such as Inez Nathaniel Walker, a South Carolina-born farm and factory
worker who received little formal education and began drawing while in
prison. Walker’s colorful drawings of women with highly stylized hair-dos
have intrigued collectors and art enthusiasts for years ᅵ" many of her
drawings are thought to be depictions of women she observed in prison.

The exhibition also features work from Howard Finster, an illustrious
self-taught artist and preacher who lived and worked in the rural South.
Finster created art out of anything he could find, including plywood,
canvas, gourds, bottles and mirrors, and is known for his elaborate, highly
detailed paintings that communicate his spiritual messages. The Bedford
Gallery expects Insider / Outsider Art to stir some lively conversations
ᅵ" the term “Outsider” art and its definition by some as raw and
naïve has been under debate in the art world.

THIS MONTH'S TOPIC: Does the Weirdness of Quantum Physics Influence the
Brain?

Neuroscientists say that there is a mystery at the core of our
understanding of consciousness. Physicists say that there is a mystery at
the core of our understanding of quantum mechanics. Do these two mysteries
have anything to do with each other? UC Berkeley physicist Stan Klein, a
founding member of the Association for the Scientific Study of
Consciousness, will help us to get a good scientific handle on this thorny,
important, and controversial topic. Find out what Dr. Klein has to say
about the role of "quantum weirdness" as it relates to the awesome
capabilities of the brain, personal awareness, free will, and even
parapsychology.

LOCATION: Randall Museum Theater, 199 Museum Way, San Francisco

COST: $5 suggested donation to help cover costs

EATS: This event takes place at a theater, not a cafe, so dinner and drinks
will not be available. Light sweet treats will be provided.

ASK A SCIENTIST is s a casual science lecture series, founded in San
Francisco in 2003. No tests, grades, or pressure...just socializing and
chatting about the universe’s most fascinating mysteries.

Through public science gatherings in the SF Bay Area, WONDERFEST has been
celebrating science and inspiring a sense of wonder about the world for
over a decade.

09/30/2011 - Silke Otto-Knapp / MATRIX 239

Posted: 30 Sep 2011 09:00 AM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/roGPw3K-ipo/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

September 30, 2011 - January 15, 2012

The paintings of Silke Otto-Knapp require movement. With layered washes of
similarly hued watercolors, the canvases of this London-based German artist
seem at first monochromatic, but slight changes in light or a viewer’s
position reveal clusters of dancers, a single body pressed up against the
edges of the picture plane, or a moonlit landscape. Moving in front of the
paintings, we see their potential motion iconic performances by George
Balanchine, Yvonne Rainer, Bronislava Nijinska lie latent within, or a
landscape appears: a painted backdrop, awaiting stage directions.
Reinterpreting the modernist logic of Ad Reinhardt and Merce Cunningham,
Otto-Knapp draws from the vocabulary of abstraction to renew our engagement
in the act of seeing.

Otto-Knapp’s recent work conflates the mediums of painting and
performance by creating a third site: a theatrical/pictorial stage. Her
application of silver pigment serves to echo the shiny seduction of Pop
materiality and to veil, or curtain, the represented image. Appropriating
famous photographs from contemporary choreography, she stages them within,
and behind, this ethereal pigment. This makes for a surprisingly
kinesthetic spectacle: figures float tenuously between visibility and
invisibility, refusing to be ‘fixed’ onto the canvas, and we, as
spectators, perform our own extemporal choreography out of the friction of
standing before and within staged space.

This work has inspired a ***@TE event with rare videos and live dance
performances that will celebrate the opening of the exhibition.

GREETINGS ON BEHALF OF THE PEOPLE OF OUR PLANET!
By Dave Cerf + Sam Green

Dave Cerf and Sam Green present three short "live documentaries" which
combine film, live narration, and sound mixing. In the local premiere of
The Voyager Spacecraft, Green and Cerf use the materials of the “Golden
Record,” a collection of photographs, natural sounds, and music compiled
by astronomer Carl Sagan for a time capsule inside the unmanned
interstellar Voyager Spacecraft. They will also present ‘remixed’
versions of two earlier works: The World’s Largest Shopping Mall, in
which images of the South China Mall outside of Guangzhou, China, a huge
mall without customers, are juxtaposed with reflections on globalization;
and The Universal Language, which tells of Esperanto, an artificial
language created more than 100 years ago in the hope of ending war and
cultural conflict.

Take a journey back through time to revisit the music of the 50’s and
60’s with Kathy Moehring, Earl Rivard and the Quadravibe jazz ensemble.
This evening of sweet nostalgia will revisit the classic oldies but goodies
and remind you of special times and melodic moments of the past. The music
of this dynamic group veers in a variety of vibrant directions, but always
returns to the strong melody lines that ensnare the listener. Quadravibe
also features Kelly Park on keyboards, Mike Shiplet on Drums, and Clinton
Day on Electric bass.

Alameda’s Troubadour, Earl J Rivard, has been serenading delighted
audiences for years. With a vast repertoire of over 500 cover tunes and
dozens of original songs in English, Spanish, and Italian, sung in a broad
range of styles spanning blues, jazz, folk, and rock, Earl J’s
extraordinary vocal style has pleased audiences up and down the state and
in venues across the country and overseas, including such venerable stages
as the Great American Music Hall and Yoshi's. Don’t miss his act:
classic covers, classy originals, and a voice you won't forget!

Rhythmix Cultural Works (RCW) opened its doors in 2007 as a community arts
center to bring people of all ages together for a wide range of high
quality arts experiences. Only five minutes from downtown Oakland off Hwy
880, RCW offers a beautifully renovated 150-seat theater, art gallery and
classroom as affordable space for live performances, exhibitions, arts
education and cultural exchange for youth, families and adults. By
providing a range of exhibits, workshops, classes and performances, RCW
supports local, regional and international artists in the presentation of
their work and strives to encourage community awareness through
participation in the arts.

Sports For the Masses
Introducing works by: Marta Solomianko

One night only exhibition, Saturday, September 24, 2011, 7-11PM

Artist in Residence, Marta Solomianko will show work from her 4 month
residency in an exhibition titled, Sports For the Masses, which opens for a
one night installation at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 24, in CELLspace
gallery, 2050 Bryant St. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Since its dedication, in 1996, CELLspace, located in San Francisco’s
vibrant Mission District, has offered a flexible environment for artists to
experiment and thrive in. Its space serves many groups, organizations, and
styles ranging from Monday night Aztec dancing, to Wednesday night Tango,
to a live/work international artist residency program called Project 2048.
Residents of the Project 2048 program contribute to an already
multi-ethnic, multi-discipline, intergenerational artistic community at
CELLspace and are encouraged to present their work publicly at the end of
their 3-4 month residency.

Since moving to San Francisco, California and living at CELLspace,
Solomianko says her work has changed; “I began to think outside of the
canvas”. Her work addresses suburban development, the American dream, and
women’s roles in mass culture. Solomianko’s use of obsessive repetition
serves to increase and exaggerate the absurdity she sees in life. Her first
solo exhibition, Sports For the Masses, will feature works on paper and
canvas as well as a site-specific installation.

Marta Solomianko was born in 1989 in Warsaw, Poland and grew up on Long
Island. She received her BA in Studio Art from Bates College in Lewiston,
Maine this past May 2011. She now lives and works in California.

Please join us for a one night only opening reception.

Jason Kahn was born in New York in 1960 and grew up in Los Angeles. He
moved to Europe in 1990, first living in Berlin until 1999 then moving to
Switzerland. He is currently based in ZÌrich. Kahn came of musical age in
the late 1970's, playing drums in punk bands and later making many records
for the Los Angeles-based SST label. He turned more to improvised music in
the late 1980's, culminating with his move to Berlin where he spent many
years working as a drummer and percussionist in different projects of
improvised music, as well as playing in composer Arnold Dreyblatt's group
The Orchestra of Excited Strings. In Berlin Kahn began working with
electronics and composing. He started releasing solo CD's in 1998 on his
Cut imprint, which ran from 1997 until 2007.

In these solo performances, Jason will be working with an
unstable system of different signal inputs being
fed into an analog synthesizer, which he in turn
feeds back into itself, creating at times volatile
and unpredictable layers of sound. Always at some
point in these concerts he cede control to the
System as it determines its own momentun:
implosion, explosion, stasis, density, silence.

Performance Tools:
Jason Kahn // electronics (anlaog synthesizer,
mixing board, piezo microphone, magnetic coils,
short wave radio, sound recorder).
