10/26/2012 - MOWGLI and I The Jungle Book Retold A Classic for All Ages

Posted: 26 Oct 2012 06:00 PM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/ul_95nKeQTk/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

About The Play

Rudyard Kipling's 19th century masterpiece The Jungle Book, which was
subsequently made into a movie of the same name by Disney in 1967,
gets a makeover in this stage adaptation by Harish Sunderam Agastya.
Mowgli + I is a re-interpretation and extension of Kipling's
original, where man-cub Mowgli, raised by wolves and other animals,
attempts to escape his arch-enemy, a man-eating tiger named Sher
Khan. The play, set in modern day India, uses multiple narrators, as
well as spectacular costumes, sets and music, to explore the
personalities and backstories behind the characters and weave a
colorful tale of friendship, aspiration, betrayal, and self-discovery
that people of all ages can relate to and enjoy.

10/26/2012 - Mirror Mirror: An Exhibition in Homage to Suzy Solidor

Mirror Mirror: An Exhibition in Homage to Suzy Solidor
Oct 24 through Nov 25
Opening reception Oct 26, 6 - 8 pm.

Curated by Jo Bloxham + Benjamin Lignel

Exhibition catalog available

Mirror Mirror tributes the singular life of Suzy Solidor (1900 -1983), an
iconic figure of Parisian night-life during the roaring twenties. A singer,
model, writer and actress, Solidor owned a nightclub in Paris where she
wooed her audience with a staple of sailor songs in homage to Surcouf, the
corsair of St Malo she claimed as her ancestor, and ballads chronicling
love affairs. A self-avowed sexual predator, she openly dated both men and
women, and became somewhat of a de facto advocate of sexual freedom. A
sought-after model for painters, sculptors and photographers (from Cocteau
to Bacon), she slowly built-up a collection of more than 200 portraits of
herself.

A contemporary reflection of those original portraits, Mirror Mirror
features twenty-nine artists from fourteen countries who have creatively
respond to the life of Suzy Solidor. The exhibition was first displayed at
Espace Solidor in her own village of Cagnes-Sur-Mer France. This is the
only US venue.

Nothing to See Here
Opening Reception: Friday, October 26 6-8pm
Exhibition Dates: October 26, 2012 - January 27, 2013

An Exhibition of Photography featuring:
Johnna Arnold, Joshua Band, Nicole Jean Hill and Jin Zhu.
Curated by Aimee Le Duc

The visions of landscape as put forth by these four California
photographers reveal sites that should either be ignored or passed over.
They are images of freeway overpasses, dilapidated urban sidewalks and
roadsides. They are the parts of our landscape we should turn away from and
not consider. However, by honing in on specific sections of these
landscapes - reconsidering them as topographies of our culture, we can
begin to see the illicit, inappropriate or simply sad actions that in fact
do or perhaps at one time occurred inside these environments.

Your friends at FreeDub have been hearing the same rumors that you have.
You know the ones about the kids who left school after finding the scene;
then decided to use their chemistry knowledge to create a pill that would
make Molly, Stella, and Lucy seem like the members of your grandma’s
bridge game?

Yeah, we’ve heard that they were students at Stanford and built a lab in
the Santa Cruz Mountains. We’ve heard that they dropped out of Berkeley
and moved to Grass Valley. We’ve
even heard that they were kids from Academy of Art, who now have a base in
Oakland. No matter what school they came from, or where they built their
lab, everyone seems to agree that their creation, 2-BRN-Z, will get your
ass Hiiiiiiigh.

On BRN-Z you can feel the music like never before, the visuals make you
realize what eyes are really for, dancing feels like floating on air, and
the energy it gives seems to never die. Unfortunately 2-BRN-Z has one small
side-effect: Users are turned into zombies. Oh well. Nothing is perfect.

Instead of getting up in arms about what the kids are doing these days, and
complaining about how much better the scene was before all these zombies
started showing up, we decided we might as well show the undead that we
still have some PLUR left in our hearts. To do that, Freeform Vs.
Dubalicious, together with guest hosts, Open Invitation, is inviting all
the undead club-kids, and the people that love them, to come to our:

10/26/2012 - Winter of the Witch and Other Tales of Possession and

Posted: 26 Oct 2012 06:00 PM PDT

Oddball Films and guest curator Lynn Cursaro present Winter of the Witch
and Other Tales of Possession and Enchantment featuring a coven full of
maternal, malevolent, saucy, sweet and hippie-dippie witches to ring in
Halloween weekend. The charming Winter of the Witch (1969) presents us
with a mischievous old dear who is eager to share the delicious secret of
happiness. Georges MéliÚs’s pioneering cinema of visual magic is the
perfect vehicle for a pair of hellzapoppin’ otherworldly shenanigans: The
Inn Where No Man Rests and The Witch’s Revenge, (both 1903). The Occult:
X-Factor or Fraud (1973), examines the groovy Woodstock-era resurgence of
the dark arts. Witchcraft’s time-tested power is pitted against Woody
Woodpecker's madcap cartoon mojo in Witch Crafty (1955). And the devil gets
his due in appropriately fleshy style in two sinful oddities: 1920s era
stag marvel The Devil and Betty Dolan's endearingly strange mid-century
burlesque in Satan-Tease. More is stewing in the Oddball cauldron, so hop
on your broom and make sure to be there! And as always, complimentary
home-baked treats appropriate to the season for all.

Date: Friday, October 26, 2012 at 8:00PM.
Venue: Oddball Films, 275 Capp Street, San Francisco
Admission: $10.00, RSVP Only to: 415-558-8117 or ***@oddballfilm.com

Posted: 27 Oct 2012 01:00 PM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/vJX2PhPvVYA/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

Redwood Symphony's popular spook-tainment returns with Robert
Rodriguez's "A Colorful Symphony," narrated by Valerie Sarfaty and given
spectacular lighting effects by Matthew Bain. Based on a chapter of the
same name from Norton Juster's great children's book, The Phantom
Tollbooth, the story takes up where Milo comes across an immense orchestra
in the middle of the forest, conducted by Chroma, whose job it is to
conduct the colors of the morning, noon and night. But find out what
happens when Milo suddenly finds himself holding Chroma's baton, with an
out-of-control orchestra and a world spinning with crazy colors!

The concert, conducted by Eric Kujawsky and Assistant Conductor Kristin
Link, will also include excerpts from Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, and
more. The orchestra will be in costume, and the audience is invited to come
likewise! Ten lucky raffle winners will be videoed and photographed
conducting the orchestra in a Sousa march.

The program will begin at 3:00 with a Tour of the Orchestra, in which
members will do demos and answer questions about playing, practicing and
having a very cool hobby!

FYI, while we are charging admission for children ($10) this concert, our
five subscription concerts are FREE for children 17 and under. There is no
other local arts group doing this!

Set design will be epic and the club will be awash in party favors and pink
fog! Doors open at 7pm for general socializing and frivolity, games, an
d classic Halloween tunes such as "Purple People Eater" and "Monster Mash."

At 8pm we kick off our first performance: "Rocky Horror Puppet Show" by The
Flat Broke Puppet Company!

Attached is a link of guidelines for proper audience participation in Rocky
Horror screenings; http://www.rockyhorror.com/participation/proplist.php

Boppity Bear Enterprises will provide the party hats, noisemakers,
newspapers, and TP! And maybe some squirtguns. 50 Mason might not be too
keen on the rice.

Following Rocky Horror, from 9-10 pm, will be the Kinda Boo! Halloween
revue, a theatrical production of various vaudevillian, Halloween inspired,
songs!

From 10-11 we'll be graced with both the music of Alex Jimenez (who is
rumored to have a costume idea that takes two hours to prepare, and will
require singing through some sort of tube!), and Liz O doing whatever she
wants. She'll most definitely be sassy, charming, and cute, and play some
tunes, crack some jokes, and usher in "The Walking Dead," "The Juggernaut"
and "The Hullabaloo."

Which brings us to our last part of the evening; The Voodoo Cabaret! Around
the time Halloween starts to turn into Day of The Dead, the stage will be
commanded by live drummers and dancers, and lead singer Gisela Tangui
calling down the spirits to kick off a magical month of November!

We are all so excited to bring you this very special Halloween show, and
are charging a cover of just 3$ (donations greatly appreciated!) so that
everyone may partake!

See you on the 31st!!! And costume ideas for Liz O + Boppity Bear greatly
appreciated (in case Liz O can't financially realize her dream of being a
sexy gorilla). We dress up virtually every other day of the year, so
Halloween always stumps us!
