10 pm, come to the Exploratorium and perceive the science behind the senses
at After Dark: The Senses! Feel the prickly spines of a hedgehog, enjoy a
cocktail, and then try out hearing like a snake. Guests will get to see how
a blind robot can juggle, learn about taste receptors not found on the
tongue and find out by smell who they find most attractive. Check out the
Tactile Dome and listen to music by Jonas Reinhardt’s Senses Band
(http://www.jonasreinhardt.com/) as they perform electronica from their
album “Music for the Tactile Dome” - in the dark!

The Exploratorium’s current artist-in-residence, Paul Clipson, will
present a new film installation in the museum’s Storefront Space. The
yet-to-be-titled work will feature multiple video projections and their
accompanying soundtracks played in a random shuffle. The effect is a
hypnotic and ever-changing audio-visual composition, and a study in various
forms of light in the immersive environment of this space. Paul Clipson is
a filmmaker and experimental film artist whose work usually involves
projected installation, as well as live collaborative performances
utilizing sound. His works have been exhibited and performed both
nationally as well as internationally. Clipson's largely improvised,
in-camera-edited super-8mm films often employ multiple exposures, dissolves
and macro imagery.

11/03/2011 - The Healthiest Man On Earth: A Poets Journey With Parkinsons,
an evening of spoken word and inspirational stories

Posted: 03 Nov 2011 05:30 PM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/Zcmh_4mmQMk/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

Oakland Writer/Artist Gary Turchin was 58 years old, afflicted with
Parkinson’s, and suddenly laid off from his job. His future didn’t look
promising. So what did Turchin do? He wrote and illustrated a funny and
inspiring picture book about life, called If I Were You, which is receiving
a warm reception and great reviews wherever he goes.

Now Turchin is turning the journey of his book’s creation, and his 7+
years with Parkinson’s, into an evening of inspiring, whimsical, and
heartfelt storytelling. The presentation, “The Healthiest Man On Earth: A
Poet’s Journey With Parkinson’s” chronicles the power of creativity
in keeping Turchin healthy, productive, and thriving. Through poetry,
comedy, stories and readings from If I Were You, Turchin will take his
audience on his journey with what he calls his “obsession” with
creativity. The presentation premiers at Alameda’s Rhythmix Cultural
Works, 2513 Blanding Ave., on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $5
to $10, sliding scale followed by a Q+A and book signing.

“With my back against the wall, I’ve been doing the best, and clearest
creative work of my life,” Turchin said. “And I’m excited to share
what I’ve been doing. But more importantly, I want to inspire others with
afflictions, not just Parkinson’s, that there is life and art and
creativity and even success after a diagnosis like Parkinson’s. I want to
be an inspiration to others, to show them what’s possible.”

“I take medicine for Parkinson’s,” Turchin explained, “but my real
medicine is art and writing and putting words and pictures together and
making them sing and dance and laugh. And when something I create, like If
I Were You, moves people, affects them, makes them laugh, brings them to
tears, than that means my medicine is working and that makes me ‘the
healthiest man on earth.’”

Rhythmix Cultural Works (RCW) opened its doors in 2007 as a community arts
center to bring people of all ages together for a wide range of high
quality arts experiences. Only five minutes from downtown Oakland off Hwy
880, RCW offers a beautifully renovated 150-seat theater, art gallery and
classroom as affordable space for live performances, exhibitions, arts
education and cultural exchange for youth, families and adults. By
providing a range of exhibits, workshops, classes and performances, RCW
supports local, regional and international artists in the presentation of
their work and strives to encourage community awareness through
participation in the arts.

11/03/2011 - Buzz: A Year of Paying Attention with author Katherine Ellison

When Katherine Ellison’s son, Buzz, was diagnosed with attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder, Ellison was already familiar with its symptoms --
she soon learned that she had ADHD as well. Struggling with her own
diagnosis while trying to be an effective parent was proving an uphill
battle. As Ellison and Buzz's mutual frustration mounted, the Pulitzer
Prize winning journalist decided to spend a year doing what came naturally:
investigating. The result is an engaging and humorous account of life with
a high-spirited child, combined with a scrupulously reported journalist’s
overview of the controversies surrounding Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity
Disorder and how best to manage it.

About Katherine Ellison: Ms. Ellison is a Pulitzer-Prize winning
investigative journalist, former foreign correspondent, writing consultant,
author of four books, and mother of two sons. Ellison has written widely on
recent developments with ADHD, now estimated to affect at least 10 million
adults and nearly 5 million children, for national media including The New
York Times and The Washington Post. Ellison’s previous books include
“The Mommy Brain: How Motherhood Makes You Smarter,” “The New Economy
of Nature: The Quest to Make Conservation Profitable,” and “Imelda:
Steel Butterfly of the Philippines.” From 1987-99, she was chief of
Knight Ridder Newspaper bureaus in Mexico and Rio de Janeiro.

WHAT: “Fully Committed” By Becky Mode
An encore presentation of “Fully Committed” featuring Dan Saski.

This hysterical one-man show follows a day in the life of Sam Peliczowski,
a hapless, out-of-work actor who has the unenviable job of taking the
telephone reservations for Manhattan’s trendiest new restaurant. While
juggling scheming socialites, name-dropping wannabes, fickle celebrities
and egomaniacal bosses, can Sam manage to land a choice part in a
production at Lincoln Center in addition to making it home for the holidays
to spend Christmas with his recently widowed dad? “Fully Committed” is
a hilarious, yet touching 90-minute high-wire act with over 40 characters
played by one actor.

Directed by Dan Saski
A co-production by the 6th Street Playhouse and Dan Saski.

Dava Sobel: A More Perfect Heaven

Author, Longitude and Galileo’s Daughter; Science Writer

The bestselling author of Longitude and Galileo's Daughter tells the story
of Nicolaus Copernicus and the revolution he inspired. By 1514, the
reclusive cleric Copernicus had written an initial outline of his
heliocentric theory in which he defied common sense and received wisdom to
place the sun, not the Earth, at the center of our universe. Over the next
two decades Copernicus expanded his theory through hundreds of
observations, while compiling in secret a book-length manuscript that
tantalized mathematicians and scientists throughout Europe. Fearing
ridicule, he refused to publish. More than 20 years later, a young German
mathematician finally unleashed Copernicus’ ideas on the world. Sobel
will chronicle the conflicting personalities and extraordinary discoveries
that shaped the Copernican revolution, giving us an unforgettable portrait
of scientific achievement and of the persistent tensions between science
and faith.

11/12/2011 - 'Circulatory System': Recent Works by Augustine Kofie

Posted: 12 Nov 2011 05:00 PM PST
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/gLY37inIjMM/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

White Walls is pleased to present "Circulatory System", the new collection
of work by Los Angeles-based artist Augustine Kofie. This will be Kofie’s
second solo show with White Walls, and will include 30 recent works
including smaller collage case studies on paper, hand painted multiple
screen prints, assemblage on wood, paintings on canvas and wood and a large
wall installation. The opening reception will be Saturday, November 12th,
from 7-11 pm, and the exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing
through December 3rd.

The works comprising "Circulatory System" feature a clean delineation of
geometric forms and divisions of space with a technical precision that
resembles architectural drafting. Kofie’s understanding of illustration
and linework results in a style of meticulous rendering that never seems
cold or sterile due to the delicate sense of balance maintained within each
composition. The muted palette softens the sharp lines, and imparts a
simple elegance to the complicated arrangements of shape.

The vintage-toned color scheme- the pale seafoam and mint greens of the
sixties and the varying beige shades of worn paper- fit perfectly with the
collage aspect of the work. Found imagery and ephemera are interwoven into
many of the paintings, constructing a new way of looking upon fragments of
the past. Kofie uses a similar approach of artful combination,
rearrangement and layering to create a soundtrack that will accompany the
exhibition, reflecting the theme as well as setting the tone for the
collection. The 40 minute soundtrack is not an itunes mix but what Kofie
calls a true mix, meaning a well-collaged assemblage of original beats,
pulled dialogue from various films and re-edited songs. The full soundtrack
will be available for listening and download October 1, 2011 via
Mixcloud.com/4x4tracktor.

From the Artist

“Circulatory System is a play on words to describe a particular painting
and collage direction in my works. To me the classic circle form brings a
balance to my heavily structural design directions or systems in this case.
The circle form gives the works a type of framework, a sort of control that
they need every so often in order to counter the movement of layers. This
encompassing effect can play as a magnifying glass to this work, a capture
within a capture, an orbit of counterbalanced line work and shapes clashing
in harmony.

There is also the concept of Circulatory referring to the re-circulation of
both found imagery and ephemera into the system, both vintage as well as
recent. The dissemination of these discarded segments of the past
reexamined through integration via these new works.”

Augustine Kofie’ is a self-taught artist living and working in Los
Angeles. While he is now internationally known for his technical skill and
inimitable style he was first known as ‘Kofie One’ and was heavily
active in the West Los Angeles graffiti scene during the 90’s. Kofie’s
work is continually evolving, creating a unique approach to geometrical
abstraction influenced by an interest in architecture, typography, and a
vintage aesthetic. Kofie has exhibited his work in New York, California,
Japan, The Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland and has been featured in
Juxtapoz, The Huffington Post, LA Weekly, Project Room and Studio Voice
