John 'celebrates the universal' through recurring symbolism (blue figures,

individuals and society as a whole; wishing, hoping, dreaming... loving.'

Meridian Music: Composers in Performance presents a new electro-acoustic
duo, Mad Ratio, featuring Tom Bickley, recorder and electronics and Adria
Otte, violin and electronics. This debut performance will feature an hour
long piece combining Gray Code and Fibonacci sequencing structures with
improvisation.

Tom Bickley listens to the world always hoping to hear more and more fully.
He plays and teaches recorder, and composes and performs using recorders,
electronics and voice. He grew up in the semitropical soundscape of
Houston, sojourned in Washington, DC (studying music, religion, and
information science) and came to the Bay Area as a composer in residence at
Mills College. He performs with Gusty Winds May Exist (with Nancy Beckman),
Three Trapped Tigers (with recorder players David Barnett and Judy
Linsenberg), co-founded and directs the Cornelius Cardew Choir, and is on
the Library Faculty at CSU East Bay. He holds the Certificate in Deep
Listening from Pauline Oliveros and the Deep Listening Institute.

Adria Otte is a multi-instrumentalist whose primary focus has been on
violin and guitar. She studied music at Bard College and has performed in
ensembles ranging from string quartets to rock bands to free improvisation
groups. She frequently collaborates with dancer/musician/performance artist
Dohee Lee and performs regularly with Jamaesori, a traditional Korean
drumming group.

Since September, the Occupy movement has staked a claim in every Facebook
feed, almost every news program and in literally more than 100 major cities
in the United States alone. Using the tools of collective assembly,
occupiers have mobilized thousands in their fight for global change and
against the richest 1 percent, but so many people are still less than sure
what Occupy is all about. What have been the strategies and intent of this
people-powered movement? Now that they have the world’s attention, what
are they going to do with it? What is driving the movement forward?

Join us for a 2-hour forum, including a panel discussion with Oakland Mayor
Jean Quan and Occupy leaders to tackle the what, why and future of
Occupy’s mission to channel change. Then we’ll get our own Occupy on,
with a break out discussion and resolution reception.

12/16/2011 - Cinesex 101

Oddball Films presents Cinesex 101. Take notes as guest curator Neil Van
Gorder guides you through the facts, pleasures and risks of sex with a
collection of instructional, comical and explicit films. Start by learning
the basics: Birds, Bees and Storks (1965), an animated satire about a
father who sets out to explain the facts of life to his son, but becomes
increasingly embarrassed to the point where his explanations are so vague
as to be incomprehensible; Flowers and Bees: A Springtime Story (1973) with
pollinating bees and blooming flowers shot with time-lapse photography; and
HE and SHE - part 2 (1970), a "white coater" documentary that teaches the
psychological effects of sex and gives tips with visual examples on how to
make you a better lover. You’ll be sure to practice safe sex after
watching VD: Attack Plan (1972), a D*sn*y camp cartoon classic. Watch in
wide-eye wonder as a veteran vd germ in the “contagion corps” outlines
how these insidious creatures spread the dreaded syphilis and gonorrhea
germs! Watch, listen and learn! With the fundamentals covered, move on to
possible applications: in No Help Needed (1940), women explore themselves
and each other in this extremely rare vintage lesbian porn film, and in The
Closet (1962) a handsome body builder gives a naked man the massage of his
life. Get your voyeur on with Girlie Reel (1950’s) as voluptuous
strippers wiggle and dance for the camera, and Uncle Si and the Sirens
(1938), a rather silly and humorous film about a farmer who buys a
television and tries to tune in on various naked ladies. Plus! See how sex
sells in the 1970s with a compilation of advertisements and movie trailers.

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!
December 17 - 18
Will it snow? Don't "flake out" and miss this winter theme weekend! You
don't have to drive up to the mountains to enjoy the snow, come to
Playland-Not-at-the-Beach to make your very own snowflakes, enjoy our
snowman theme treasure hunt and make snowflakes in our craft area.

The special events of Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow! Weekend are in
addition to all of Playland's regular attractions. Guests pay one low price
to enter and play all day: $10 for children and seniors, and $15 for
general admission. Playland-Not-at-the-Beach is a nonprofit Museum of Fun.
Designed and built entirely by volunteers, the 20+ interactive exhibits
celebrate the magic and history of America's bygone amusements -- circuses,
carnivals, magic, side shows, penny arcades, amusement devices, pinball
arcades, haunted houses, and beautiful art everywhere. Our goal is to
educate newer generations about the bygone days and allow those who
remember Whitney's Playland and the Sutro Baths the opportunity to
recapture the glorious sights and sounds of that marvelous era.

The rites and rituals of the Merja people"an ethnic minority of
Finno-Urgric extraction originally from the Volga region of Russia" form
the backbone of this lyrical, sensual and dreamlike film about love and
loss. After his beloved wife Tanja dies, pulp factory CEO Miron calls on
his best friend Aist to help him with his final goodbye. With water as a
key element, director Aleksei Fedorchenko beautifully weaves the myths and
traditions of this vanishing culture into his poetic film. The result is a
melancholy and mystical journey following the complex and twisting currents
of the human heart.

It's Christmas Eve, and it's also ... Adrian's 29th Birthday!* It's going
to be a "Friends + Family Night" at DNA Lounge, as Bootie's host,
co-founder, and resident DJ celebrates his actual B-Day by spinning a
special midnight set, as well as singing a few holiday mashups throughout
the night, including a Midnight Mashup Show with Jason from Smash-Up Derby.
The two will be performing as A+J, singing the modern classic, "Dick In A
Box."

Also spinning on the main floor will be resident DJ Mysterious D, and doing
a late-night set, it's the return of DJ Jay-R. And in the upstairs room,
John!John! Battles The Italian Robot, as two of Bootie's favorite DJs throw
it down, making sure you dance your ass off into the Christmas holiday!

Launched in 2003 in San Francisco by A Plus D - aka DJs Adrian + Mysterious
D - Bootie was the first club night dedicated solely to the burgeoning
artform of the bootleg mashup - and is now the biggest mashup event in the

guessing and body dancing with creative song combinations, mixing and
matching every musical genre, era, and style into one big dance party.

01/05/2012 - Michael Gazzaniga: Who's in Charge? Free Will and the Science

Thu, Jan 5 2012 - 6:00pm
Who's in Charge? Free Will and the Science of the Brain

Michael Gazzaniga, Professor of Psychology and Director of the SAGE Center
for the Study of Mind, UC Santa Barbara

Known as the "father of cognitive neuroscience," Gazzaniga makes a powerful
argument for free will. The question of free will versus determinism
continues to vex scientists, psychologists and philosophers, but the
biological evidence is not as stridently deterministic as it is often
presented. Dr. Gazzaniga argues that the human mind constrains the brain
and monitors our behavior, much as a government constrains its citizens.
Drawing on cutting-edge neuroscience and psychology, as well as ethics and
law, he offers a deeply considered case for human responsibility.

01/07/2012 - Primo: The Art of David and Hugh D'Andrade

Posted: 07 Jan 2012 04:00 PM PST
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/squidlist/~3/sKgeoLHVB2w/index.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

a.Muse welcomes artists Hugh and David D’Andrade- two cousins from
opposite sides of the California divide: San Francisco and Los Angeles.
This first time collaboration from the cousins will consist of Hugh’s
graphic, colorful, sometimes politically charged editorial, book and poster
illustrations. David is a former San Francisco artist now residing in Los
Angeles. David creates colorful abstract painting/collages which explore
the use of the brushstroke as an element of focus while referencing paint
application and digital technology.

Hugh, the younger of the cousins, was greatly inspired by his cousin
David’s art. “David could draw superheroes better than anyone!”
Forty years later, both David and Hugh are working artists, with shared
sensibilities but very different styles. David makes paintings, drawings
and collages which grapple the fine line between abstraction and
representation. Hugh is known for his graphic poster art and illustration.
Though they have admired each others' work for years, this is their first
joint show and collaboration.

“My work is a meager attempt to critique the bloated canon of abstract
painting in reference to Abstract Expressionism,” says David whose
interest “is to merge the implied action of the digital versus the
physicality of the brushstroke.”

Hugh’s work, though similarly colorful, couldn’t be more different in
theme.

“What I do is ‘graphic art.’ People use that term to describe
commercial art, but I think the term should be used more broadly to
describe artwork that is clear, simple and direct, and that seeks a broad
audience using the straightforward tricks that have been used by artists
for centuries: composition, narrative, myth (aka "pop culture" in today's
world), typography, and color. Lots of color.”

Both artists seek a more immediate and less conceptual response from the
viewer, something immediately apparent when considering the work. Words
like fun and playful come to mind, and the exhibit at a.Muse promises to be
just that.

around the country for eight years. This is not a lecture or a college
course, it's philosophy in action! Philosophy Talk is a fun opportunity to
explore issues of importance to your audience in a thoughtful, friendly
fashion, where thinking is encouraged.

Tickets can be purchased online at Brown Paper Tickets, by phone, or in
person through The Marsh's box office.

12:00pm - Poetry as a Way of Knowing with Jane Hirshfield.
What is poetry? Mere word play? A pretty, or at any rate striking, way of
expressing thought and emotion? Or does great poetry involve an approach to
the world that provides insight and information not available in other
ways? Ken and John explore how poetry can illuminate what we know with
award-winning poet Jane Hirshfield, author of Come, Thiefand other poetic
works of philosophical richness. (buy tickets)

3:00pm - What Are Leaders Made of? with Deborah Rhode.
There seems to be a paradox in leadership: the qualities of ruthlessness
and opportunism necessary to attain power and become a leader are not
necessarily the qualities of morality and a sense of justice that make for
a good leader. Do the traits that make it likely that someone will become a
leader correlate positively or negatively with the traits that make a good
and effective leader? Do our democratic institutions lead to better leaders
than, say, a lottery like the Athenians used? Ken and John ask what leaders
are - and should be - made of with Stanford Law Professor Deborah Rhode,
co-author of Moral Leadership: The Theory and Practice of Power, Judgment,
and Policy. (buy tickets)
